Ice Fishing Basics

First and formost an ice fisherman needs the location of good lakes for ice fishing. Usually a lake that produces lots of fish in the summer fishin season will also produce numerous fish in the winter.

Many factors in a lake in winter affect fish life, changing their reactions, their feeding habits, and even their survival rate. For instance a heavy layer of snow over the ice will cut down on the amount of light that filters into the water, reducing weed growth and oxygen production. This will result in the fish becoming lethargic, interested in only conserving their energy to survive rather than wasting energy to feed and move around.

Lakes that are weed choked in the summer is usually is shallow and contains very few deep pools or spots that contain oygen rich pockets for fish to congregate, and may not be able to sustain a large fish population in the winter months. Lakes that produce great numbers of fish in summer are likely to congregate in these poolos and use up the oxygen and they will not all survive.

Fish die off in the winter does not mean that severe oxygen depletion has occured throughout the whole lake; certain areas will still produce good ice fishing results. Consider all factors when choosing a lake for ice fishing.

ICE FISHING SPOTS

For new folks ice fishing the best spot to start is to go where the crowds or people are before you start to experiment. The ice fish crowd loves to socialise while fishing as it ads to the enjoyment. The willingness to share good fishing spots with others is and advntage to the newcomer to ice fishing. ICE FISHING EQUIPMENT

For the weekend ice fishing angler I would suggest a standard ice fishing rod, which can be purchased at any sorting goods store. The rod is seldom more than a fiberglass rod about two feet long with two line guides and a small take up reel. The line can be from 2 to 6 pound test monofilament. Bobbers are a handy thing for ice fishing so keep a couple in your pack. You will also need a variety of lures, hooks, sinkers, swivels and other basic fishing tackle. Also a chisel, ice spud or ice auger for your ice fishing holes. Hit your local bait store before you leave to pick any live bait needed for the species and lake you intend to fish.

Don't overdo it on your first ice fishing trip out onto the lake. Go out early in the morning and fish till noon, and call it a day. If the fish are biting you should have caught your share by then. If the fish don't bite worry not you will have learnt to use the new equipment. The next trip out you will be even more eqipped and ready for all the fish you will catch.

DRESSING FOR ICE FISHING

Dressing comfortably for ice fishing presents some problems that do not confront other outdoor winter activities. The chief concern is to stay warm at all times, but ice fishing by nature involves extremes of activity that will cause you to perspire if you are dressed to warmly, and then freeze when you sit too long. You may work up a swet just getting there and setting up to start fishing. Then sitting for a long time once fishing then you are cold. The secret is to dress warmly for travel and have more to put on for the periods of inactivity. A good snowmobile outfit covers all the needs of most ice fishermen. Remember layers under the parka, you can always take it off if you are too warm. Get out ther and enjoy, catch some fish and you will become and addict of fishing in all seasons.

next take a look at what sort of fly fishing gear you're going to
need to do it. While nymph fly fishing uses pretty much the same
gear you use when dry fly fishing, there is a few small items
that any successfully nymph fisherman will want to have. These
items are strike indicators, some small weights, and a good pair
of fly fishing sunglasses.

Strike Indicators for Nymph Fishing

First, you will need some strike indicators. Strike indicators
are generally bright orange, ungodly looking things that get put
on your leader well above the fly or on the fly line itself, at
the junction of the fly line and leader. These strike indicators
are what you look at when nymph fishing not the fly itself.
With practice and patience, youll eventually be able to tell
when unnatural movements occur in the strike indicator which
most likely indicates that a fish just took your nymph fly
imitation.

Exactly where to put the strike indicator is a matter of some
debate, but ultimately boils down to what you are fly fishing for
and where you are doing it. Wary Brown Trout in heavily fished
waters, like the Missouri River, are not likely to be real wild
about seeing a bright orange object just a few feet above the
fly. On the other hand, more gullible trout or trout that receive
less fly fishing pressure could probably care less about it. In
short, use your judgment, erring on the side of caution (placing
the strike indicator as far away from the fly as possible, for
your abilities).

Small Weights for Nymph Fishing

The second thing youll need for many rivers will be some small
weights to add to your fly line or leader. In many, if not most
nymph fly fishing situations, a floating line is still used.
However, to get the fly down to the depth you want it to go will
require weighting it (at least in faster water).

This is best done with the newer twist on non-toxic weights
that are now available. Using these types of weights, an angler
can put on as much or as little weight as needed to bring the fly
down to depth, while at the same time preventing the fish from
inhaling toxic lead (which can kill them).

Should you plan on fishing in really deep or fast rivers where
even a weighted leader will not get the fly down to depth fast
enough, then you will also want to look at investing in a
sink-tip fly line. Sink-tip fly lines have the tip of the fly
line weighted to sink, thus allowing it to sink the nymph fly
more quickly.

Ice Fishing Can be a very exciting experience

One of the most popular recreational forms of fishing in Scandinavia, Russia and Germany is Ice Fishing, a sport also practiced in Canada and the United States, not only during winter, but also all year round in Alaska. However the most popular place to enjoy this activity is in the Great Lakes. Considered originally from Scandinavia, it was brought to America by Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish settlers arriving to Minnesota, a state where people from Nordic families is totally engaged in this sport. Ice fishing was exported to Canada from Minnesota and from here, it also arrived in Alaska.

Minnesotans found ice fishing an entertaining option, keeping in mind that the Great Lakes are often totally frozen, with the only exception being Lake Erie. When the bays of the Great Lakes freeze, yellow perch and northern pike are the most common catches waiting for enthusiasts of this sport. Ice fishing is practiced catching fish with lines and spears or hooks by opening a hole in the frozen lake to fish through. Depending on personal preferences, fishermen can sit in a heated cabin on the ice or on a stool placed on the open expanse of the frozen lake. Cabins are more popular indeed, because most of them have bunks and diverse amenities.

From all the forms of fishing, ice fishing is perhaps the activity requiring less effort and skill, just patience, good luck and the inner conviction of enjoy doing nothing else that sitting on ice, if not physical, at least exposed to low temperatures. For some people, this condition may appear unappealing but in the northern states, ice fishing is considered a serious entertaining activity with competitions and contests offering good prizes to people with the largest fish catches within a limited period of time.

One of the contests attracting more people every year is held at the Houghton Lake in Michigan. The "Tip-Up Town, USA", an annual festival celebrated the last 56 years ago during the second third of winter, and enhanced with other snow related activities such as strolling, snowmobiling, snow-sculpting and fireworks, in conjunction with Ice fishing.

While in the United States, Ice fishing contests have a prevalent carnival like atmosphere, full of camaraderie, in Finland, ice fishing contests have been defaced after repeated scandals involving both organizers and contestants, who have been caught cheating, making people belief this is not a sport, but just a pastime. However, in the United States there is an association supporting ice fishing activities, the American Ice Fishing Association (AIFA), which says that ice fishing contributes to managing the fish species population, and the economic growth of the community, bringing calming and relaxing effects of well being to all the participants.

Because ice fishing can be something more than a one-day experience, there are shelters conveniently located for longer fishing expeditions. Some others are mounted on-demand using simple structures, although the larger heated structures are basic for the success of fishing trips lasting several days.
